Tutorial Technique Challenge No. 1: Custom Photo Brushes

We have another new challenge for you this month! The Tutorial Technique Challenge gives you an opportunity to take your scrapbooking to the next level. Whether the technique is new to you or you’re a seasoned pro, we challenge you to show us how you would apply it to your own style. The rules are very simple. Work through the tutorial to create a new layout that incorporates the technique, using only DesignerDigitals products, and upload it to the Tutorial Technique Challenge gallery by 11 p.m ET on Sunday, February 5th. A winner will be chosen at random to receive a $5 gift certificate to the store. If you don’t already own the tutorial, watch for it in the Thrifty Thursday sale this week!

This first challenge uses the How’d They Do That? No. 8: Custom Photo Brushes tutorial.

image

This tutorial walks you through the steps for creating a custom brush from a photograph. While you can create a brush from an entire photo, this works best if you’re able to extract a subject from its background. The tutorial provides some ideas on how to use the technique in different ways.

Here are a few examples of the technique from the Creative Team:

image
I (Cassie) created this page by making a brush of the extracted image then using that brush to create a sticker. I blended the original photo’s background into the background paper with a gradient mask.
