Build a block of photos: Saturday Scraplift No.213

This week’s inspiration comes to us from the gallery of Lee Ann (aka quietgirl):

Her gallery is bursting with inspiration, and this great page is no exception.

What I really love about it is the way she has built a block from her photos.

When you mask or erase the edges of photos, sometimes this can leave them lacking in weight or definition which is not what you want from the focal point of your page. This is especially the case if they are floating in the middle of the page. There are lots of way around this, but I really like Lee Ann’s approach here which is to gather the photos together and back them with a defined shape with a strong edge.

The photos now work as one strong defined element on the page. The Loopdaloops and sketchy elements complement the edges of the masked photos perfectly so that it all works so well together. And, of course, the use of color is fantastic. Notice how the colors of the tee-shirt (of the most important person in this birthday page!!)have been used. Not so much that they overpower the photos but just enough to reinforce the photos and give the page a cohesive look. When pulling colors from the photos (particularly from clothes) sometimes less is more - try going with a neutral background and use those colors as accent colors.

I really enjoyed lifting this great layout, and I know Laura and Sarah did too. Look at the different places we ended up using the same jumping off point (I wonder where you might end up if you try lifting too?):
