February Photo Challenge

Join us for the February Photo Challenge!

This month’s challenge is to capture something at an aperture of f/8. Why an aperture of f/8.0? F/8 is considered a story telling aperture. You are able to get much of your subject in focus, giving the viewer more to see. Many of us are addicted to shooting with “wide-open” apertures like f/1.4, blurring our background with only a small portion of our subject in focus. The f/8.0 challenge moves you out of that comfortable spot! Think creatively, interpret anyway you’d like, just use f/8! Since f/8.0 doesn’t let as much light in as wider apertures, watch your shutter speed, and you may need to bump your ISO up some!

Enter one photo with the tag, DesignerDigitals_February, in our DesignerDigitals POTD group at flickr. Your photo needs to be taken in the month of February and posted by midnight EST February 28, 2010.

The winner will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to B&H Photography and be featured on the DesignerDigitals blog.

Happy Shooting! Looking forward to seeing your story.

Heritage Challenge No. 21

Welcome to the 21st Heritage Challenge!

This week’s challenge involves pets. Pets play a large role in our families - they become our family members and are a huge part of our lives. My current pet, Sawyer the crazy puppy, drives me up a wall but I wouldn’t trade him for anything. He’s an important part of our family.

So, let’s scrap heritage photos of pets this week!

Did you have a pet as a child that you’ll never forget? Photos of a pet you might have dressed up in funny clothes? Or maybe your parents or grandparents had a pet that has a special place in their heart.

Here are a few examples from our Creative Team.

Bonnie’s layout immediately caught my eye. The horse element is about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Supplies: All You Need Overlays No. 7, Olde World Ornaments Brushes and Stamps No. 3, Paper Textures No. 2 BrushSet, Journal It! No. 1 Brushes and Stamps, Felt Board Friends: Barnyard Buddies, Mon Petit Ballon Bleu Solids Paper Pack, Botanical Fusion No. 01 Kit, Photo Wraps No. 01, Help Haiti Collaborative Collection, Collection Manuscrite Paper Pack, Farm Fresh Collection, Country Roads Kit, Vintage Photo Frames No. 12, Jouets Collection, Worn Page Edges No. 03

Elena’s layout is just as adorable! Look at little Elena with the calf!

Supplies: MonoBlendz Winter Whites Paperie No. 01, Janine Solids, Countryside Clusters Brushes and Stamps, Hinge Pack, My Family Genealogy Definitions Brushes and Stamps, Pressed Flowers: Brights, Twisted Stitches, Vintage Photo Frames No. 17

My layout is about some swans that my grandparents took care of during my early childhood. They weren’t real family pets but they hold a lot of great memories for me.

Supplies: Cathy Zielske’s Layered Template No. 44, Collection Manuscrite Paper Pack, New Growth Brushes and Stamps No. 5, Brad Bonanza No. 1: Digital Fasteners

Post your layouts in the Heritage Gallery this week and we’ll all enjoy the memories together.

Just my Type; Font and Alpha challenge, No. 47

Maybe it reminds me of the way I used to end up paper scrapping – run outa vowels anyone?- but I truly love to mix up my alpha and fonts. Anything altered art looking makes me happy!
You get something artistic and creative… and easy. You always have the ingredients needed!
This is my inspirational starting point-

Currently its very ‘in’ to be doing this, (tho heavens, I’ve definitely been doing it when it was probably ‘out’ too;) )And there are numerous ‘spell with photos’ websites about.
You can take both alphas or fonts for your letters, and mix them up. You can always rasterize and add a stroke to your font, to give it that sticker appeal too.
(Cassie has an excellent tutorial for that, ‘sticker art’ )

Or there are several fonts that mix it up for you, such as Laundromat 1967, Monbijoux, and Ransom Note Font, to name a few.

Plus, in store not only are there hundreds of alphas to choose from but we have Lynn’s Ransom alpha and, coming soon, Katies Found Alpha….

Want to see our example pages?
This is mine,

This is Sam’s,

And this is Linda’s

I hope we’re inspiring you! Be sure to try it out and post your pages to the JMT gallery!

Art Journal Challenge #2 - Let’s simplify!

First of all – I was amazed to see so many fantastic, personal, special and artistic layouts in the Art Journal Gallery since my last blog post!! Wow!!
To all of you who posted their pages (and to you who made, but didn’t post) – well done!! I was inspired and touched.
I decided to post some of your pages – it was difficult to choose which to pick.

KathyJ‘s inspiring page - love the way she put this together:

h_ryfa made a special page with lovely symbolism:

ExoGonia‘s page also spoke to me in a special way. Love the kite!

This week I want to focus on simplicity. An art journal page doesn’t have to be full of *everything*. It can be just as effective and speak volumes with very few words, symbols or colors. I was inspired this week by an advertisement I saw in an online newspaper and created this page – to remind myself of who I am, on days when I find it hard to find myself.

>

I also wanted to point to a technique which is called automatic writing. I sometimes use this when I have a lot on my mind. I find a lot of release in simply writing all the thoughts, memories, emotions down. To write without considering grammar or spelling, using any font that speaks to me in the moment – perhaps a script font. I then incorporate the writing into my page, not as journaling per se, but as a decorative element - part of the background. The writing doesn’t have to eligible, only you need to know what you wrote and why. The writing process itself is supposed to be the therapy part, not necessarily being able to read it again at a later point. I used this technique in this page – also a more graphic page, where colors and design are the major elements.
Most importantly - have fun! Release yourself from the need to scrap - create a page for the fun of it! Go and create some art that is your expression only!

Saturday Scraplift No. 139

I couldn’t take my eyes off this week’s inspiration layout by Carolleewhen I saw it in the gallery:

It is actually part of a two page spread, and here is the other side, which is equally gorgeous:

It’s a great example of the cross-pollination of ideas here at DD. Carollee was inspired and helped by cderousseau, whose gallery you really must check out. She has an incredible artistic eye and her heritage layouts especially are amazing. A lot of them feature the same neutral, almost desaturated palette with small elements on a white background which gives a very timeless, elegant but eye-catching effect. I think Carollee really made this layout her own though, and I was especially taken with her wonderful use of typography and the way she used the artstrokes brushes to join the photos so they weren’t left floating and disconnected.

I know you’ll find lots of inspiration in this wonderful page, as did Cassie, Janet and Patricia:

Credits: layout by Cassie, In Distress No.03 paperpack by lynn Grieveson (coming soon), Aves De Amore minikit by Andrea Victoria, Scripttease Time No.02 brushes, Heart LoopdaLoop artstrokes and LoopdaLoop artstrokes no.02 by Anna Aspnes, By the Sea no.02 by Jesse Edwards, Vintage Photo frames no.17.

Credits: layout by Janet, Classic Cardstock: Energy, Mailroom No.01 paperpack, naked tape elements, Corner its, Photo Clusters No.12, Basic paper alphabet red (recolored), Messed Up Overlays No.02, Artist’s Edge overlays no.02, grungy Spring Collection, Tag templates.

Credits: layout by Patricia, ArtPlay {alette Science No.01 by Anna Aspnes, In Distress No.03 paperpack and Scrap Express no. 58 by Lynn Grieveson.

If you are inspired too, don’t forget to post in the Saturday Scraplift gallery for us all to share.
