Inspiration from a wonderful scrapbook album

Saturday Scraplift No. 117

The layouts by Denise Gormish of her European trip have been gracing the gallery for weeks now. I love the simple yet eye-catching look of the layouts and it is going to be a stunning album.

This week’s scraplift inspiration page is one of the layouts from Denise’s album:

I love the white backgrounds Denise has been using, and the way the black text and elements pop against it. This page is a great example (thanks to the placement of the phrase tags and the flower) of a visual triangle - and also of a design which lets you fit in lots of journaling. I hope you’ll be inspired by it, just as Patricia, Heidi and Anke were.

Photos Plus White Space

One principle of good design is to provide a place for the eye to rest as it moves through a picture, scrapbook page, or any other piece of art. This week’s template choice – Katie’s Filmed Layered Template No. 2 – does just that.

image

There’s room for several photos and plenty of white space to prevent tired eyes. Take a look at how some of the Creative Team members used this fun template.

Mel (Britgirl) changed the position of the template and used the white space to include another gorgeous photo of the British countryside:

Amy (AmyL) moved the template to the right and recolored some of the filmstrip frames:

PageSet, Baby Pink Patterns + Solids Paper, Wood Type Alphabet, Cherry Festival Kit, Smoothie Shop Paper Pack, Bright Days Paper Pack.

Traditional thinker that I am, I left the template in place but used a swirling, dotted paper to draw the eye in to the photos:

Katie’s template is one of today’s Thrifty Thursday specials, so I hope you’ll add it to your stash and play along. When your page is complete, post it in the Template Challenge Gallery so we can leave you some love.

SIMPLY INSPIRED CONTEST (No. 16)

Wow! What a great response we had to our last challenge! It got me thinking that maybe you are all ready to step it up a notch. What do you think? Well, whether you’re ready or not we’re stepping out of the box this week and creating layouts based on this (yes THIS) vintage print ad:
image
Are you scratching your head? Try taking a closer look. What do you notice? Personally, I LOVE the cool mix of real and illustrated elements. What a playful concept to build into your layout. Think of placing a photo into a digitally created backdrop, placing a digital element directly in a photo or having the real and digital interact. Fun! Did you notice the shaped text block and how much interest it adds to the piece? Maybe that in itself is a starting point for a layout. Or pull inspiration from the interesting photo treatment, the subject matter, the monocromatic color scheme or the high contrast black and white shapes. Who knew there was so much inspiration packed in such a small vintage ad? It certainly goes to show that good design is truly timeless.
Have fun with the challenge and let whatever speaks to you guide your next page. Feel free to add photos, change the colors, etc. No rules. Just fun! Remember to upload to the Simply Inspired gallery on or before September 7, 2009 so we can all be inspired by your creations!!! The best part? One of you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Designer Digitals store!

I can’t wait to see how you are simply inspired! smile
